"Through their re-interpretation of the classic techniques – painting, drawing, photography, as well as video, ambient installation, public intervention, research projects and the use of the documentary form – the artists address a wide scope of topics that presently concern the Serbian society and the contemporary society at large. Their works question a range of issues: the circumstances of individual existence within a network of clashing ideologies, capital and mass media; the relationship towards the topical tendencies of historic revisionism; the experience of displacement, perception and reception of the Other and the difference through a prism of stereotypes, bias or romantic interpretations; the experience of urban place in the context of local specificities and architectural transformations; the position of artists within the art system and their relationship towards the heritage of the movements of art avant-garde of the 20th century; the mechanics and structures of personal and collective memory and forgetting. Further interpretation of works brings up the artists’ reflections on powerlessness, impossibility, responsibility, guilt, the need for solidarity, desires, gaze, misunderstanding, attempts, ideals, doubts, dependence, resistance, identity, habits, specificity and universality, margin and centre, politics and emotions, pessimism and optimism, past and present… Seen as a whole this exhibition becomes a perspective in its own right, experience of present range and interests of the art production in Serbia. The exhibition is supported by the follow-up project/presentation of activities and initiatives of relevant institutions, independent and non-governmental institutions, galleries, collectives and groups that presently work in the domain of the contemporary art in Serbia. Presentation of material documentation (catalogues, books, periodicals, videos) will aid the further research of the contemporary art in Serbia, as a part of the wider cultural scene, its achievements and its potential further development." - Miroslav Karic
