About the artist.

Tobias Magass is inspired by emblemata, symbols from literature and the kind of art emerging during the 16th and 17th centuries. Accompanied by a motto, they allude to peculiarities of human life, to typical behavioural patterns, and life experiences. They are a mirror image of the world view and the comprehension of the time. Tobias Magass takes them out of their context. The motto is not applicable; the picture is detached from the ornamental environment, reduced to an important detail or basic shape of the drawing. The historic background are left aside. What remains is the reduced graphic with its great wealth of allusions, references, associations. With the painting media of the 21st century, Tobias Magass picks up this drawing and uses it as the provocation and framework of his paintings. - Dr. phil. Johannes Römelt
